Getting to the end of the block and being like, "weird, I thought the harbor was here, I don't remember a building..."
"...wait oh my god that's a Cruise Ship. It must have docked here this morning, wtf"
I've never seen one in person and fuck they are huge.
I lived in Ketchikan, Alaska, for 6 months, which is a huge cruise ship port. Like, the local economy basically revolves around the tourists that cruise ships bring in. I arrived in November, and the cruise ships come in the summer. Everyone was telling me how, come May, they harbor would be filled with giant cruise ships, and the whole town would be swarming with tourists.
Then COVID happened.
Unrelatedly, Alaska has a lot of Filipino immigrants due to the fishing industry (iirc Unalaska is the #1 fishing port in the world by tonnage and it's 25% Filipino), so there was a lot of yummy Filipino food in Alaska. First time in my life I've had it. One of the few things the state has going for it (along with scenery) over Iowa where I live now.
