out of the many evils of the world i think the reverence we hold for the personal automobile as the premiere transportation method of our cities is one of the most pervasive and clearly destructive to the notion of a livable space. you simply should not have or need a car within a city. the fact that you do in many or most american cities is a sign of deep societal sickness
When I did an internship in Nanjing summer 2018 it was a 10 minute walk from my auntie's house to the office, and despite the awful heat (Nanjing is called one of the three furnaces of China lol, I'd stuff toilet paper in my bra to prevent sweat from dripping down between my boobs), it was really nice to see the street life on my way to and from work. Puppies playing with each other, fruit vendors, a scooter repair guy using a piece of Styrofoam to block the light while welding, kids selling newspapers...
