Show love and kindness to the widow, the orphan, and the stranger.
I rewatched it recently with @RobinProblem after having seen it in theaters forever ago
(no spoilers here) it has really nice themes of found family, recovering from abuse, and struggling under capitalism. I really love how the characters are complex, care for each other, and make decisions with mixed, layered motives, and are all distinct, feeling individuals
robin compared it to Parasite with its anti-capitalist themes; by contrast Shoplifters focuses mainly on character growth and interaction and has less action
big recommend! it's a slower-paced character drama, so expect for the time mostly to be an exploration of how the characters interact with each other and the world around them
also it's on archive dot org: https://archive.org/download/Fubcyvsgref-2018
My friend and I started watching this together and we literally didn't finiah it. We thought it was too meandering and the characters were too mean to each other (even if it might be realistic). I was wondering why the kids aren't in school. My friend dislikes arthouse filma in general and said she didn't understand why were we supposed to to care about these people.
Maybe she and I just have more popular market taste in film, idk. I liked Parmanu: the story of Pokran even though it's literally just Indian propaganda.
