as it becomes more and more likely that 21:9 will become the new 16:9, i sit in rapt anticipation of the next stage: I'm sitting at my desk in 2030 playing Halo 26 on my 32:9 monitor. a cutscene begins. the game switches to a 4:1 ratio that would leave ben-hur pillarboxed. master chiefs helmet fills all vertical space in order to be legible. 95% of my monitor is negative space. the Cinema has finally come home
you know, a fringe benefit to this hell future is that even the least visually discerning individual will realize something is amiss if they view 4:3 media on a display that stretches it to four times it's correct width. this will save the psyches of millions of people visiting their parents. oh, the parents still won't fix it - but they'll be willing to let it be fixed
as the child of parents who spent years watching letterboxed and pillarboxed 4:3 SD media on a misconfigured HD setup without realizing anything was amiss, this hurts me deeply
