i just found out that an indie game i absolutely adore, one that was only ever released in ~2/3 complete demo form, has been thoroughly abandoned by its creator, and in fact is kind of a sore point for them, as it reminds them of some really uncomfortable times in their life

i'm just... sad. sad that such a beautiful, joyous thing that the creator clearly poured their entire heart and soul into, that people still remember fondly nearly eight years after the last public demo was released, brought the creator so much pain. sad that it is quickly vanishing into the mists of time, as the original download links no longer work and most of the development screenshots and art were either deleted or fell victim to link rot (and even if you do manage to find a copy, it doesn't work properly in modern Windows versions or most VMs anyway). apparently they deleted most of their social media presence and everything they'd posted there as well, because it was just causing too much stress for them

i was considering streaming the game again, until i learned about all this, and it feels like that would be a really disrespectful thing to do now. fuck. i'm just... heartbroken.
