It's like people have forgotten that this is exactly how likes worked for an entire decade on twitter too, and they weren't pointless then?
I was listening to a streamer the other day ramble about "how come likes on twitter are public anyway, who would want that?" and it was so weird as a person who was on twitter long enough to remember that they were never built to be likes, they were originally favorites, and the purpose was just for bookmarking stuff.
Then the site just kept going and people's favorites got too numerous to be navigable, but rather than do anything to improve them, they just changed the name and icon and quietly buried any indication of their original purpose.
not only were they originally favorites, the icon was a star ⭐, frequently associated with bookmarks or marking places on a map. it made sense!!
