Ask me stuff!

I finished Earth Defense Force 5's solo campaign, and I actually really liked the story.

I didn't expect to be engaged by the story, and I was quite surprised to find myself heavily invested in it by the end. Yes, the story is corny and the dialogue cheesy, but the game takes itself completely seriously, and the result is a narrative that simultaneously makes you roll your eyes, and get invested in the ultimate outcome.

In a way, it reminded me a lot of playing TTRPGs with friends. While the overall narrative may be simple, the smaller narratives that emerge on a mission-by-mission basis feel realy meaningful. The hammy-ness of the various characters makes them easy to recognize by voice, and helps you get attached to the ones you meet often. And the game does a really good job of building a sense of "we're in this together", to the point where I was going out of my way, even in difficult missions, to make sure my long-time NPC allies made it through as best I could.
