after finishing up last night i had a vague idea about making a spritesheet of a rollling ball in the form of a grid and then animating it by using the current X and Y position (modulo frame count). i wonder if that will work in practice? seems like the kind of thing you might see in a retro console game from when they were still figuring out what could be done with very hard limitations.
I think i need to add one more intermediate when the rings "cross over" the edges.
Would also bring the frame count up to a nice round 8 in each direction, which is nice.
