When Salamander Search & Rescue are out on a call they are often under pressure to resolve a ticket as quickly as possible, and a big component of delivering people safely from harm is Dalton's navigational skills. An Android manufactured by Delta Astronautical Solutions, Dalton is Kenji's teammate aboard the Tardigrade, plotting courses to the coordinates of an emergency dispatch and managing ship resources to ensure the team has what they need when they arrive at a rescue site. He is soft-spoken and friendly, carrying himself with a quiet, gentle vibe, but he's also somewhat humorless and tends to take things literally. That's not a bad fault to have as a search and rescue operator, as his to-the-letter style of thought processing fits well with the extremely complex navigational calculations he runs in order to keep his crew's operations humming smoothly.
Similar to Haley Redraven, Dalton is a HAL-3 Astronav Droid who has opted not to take on new debt to upgrade to a HAL-4 chassis. He's had a bit of body work done to bypass the Delta EOL power inefficiency patch all HAL-3s have to deal with, and that's enough of an expense for him. While the benefits of upgrading to a HAL-4 chassis are apparent, Salamander Search & Rescue operates on a fairly thin margin and Dalton doesn't want to put the added strain of paying Delta Astronautics onto the company account. To counterbalance the technical deficit his HAL-3 chassis has compared to a HAL-4 or HAL-5 unit, Dalton maintains a shortlist of medical facilities in the Outer Belt that the Tardigrade's astronavigational computer keeps track of, allowing him to very readily plot a course to the nearest available medical facility once a search and rescue site is secured. This shortlist uses live data to stay up to date, so the Salamander crew don't burn valuable travel time delivering rescue patients to medical facilities that are either closed or at max capacity.
Dalton tends to stay on the ship when the team arrives at a rescue site, but that doesn't mean he keeps idle hands when he's not plotting starship routes. Being a Delta droid means Dalton can easily connect with most of the Tardigrade's systems, allowing him to easily prep the ship to receive a patient the away team is recovering. When he confirms the ID of a patient from Blue Team, Dalton can cross-check the patient's species against his records and adjust the med bay's climate control systems to be most comfortable to that particular patient. He can also maintain inventory of sterile medical equipment and blood transfusion bags, ensuring the ship doesn't run out of stock or keep expired blood of a given type when that type is needed for a job. It's a small thing but Dalton can remotely open the ship's doors so Blue Team can deliver a patient to Yellow Team without anyone having to touch buttons or doors or anything else. They say a Delta droid is at home on a starship and Dalton works to keep his home precisely inviting to people in need.
A fun fact about Dalton: he has a pet turtle! A Terran wood turtle named Bucephalus is a regular companion of Dalton's and will often keep him company aboard the Tardigrade while the starship is prepared and the rest of the team is hard at work. Bucephalus has a little enclosure near the crew quarters of the ship and will often hang out in Dalton's big coat pocket, and the Android will often feed him little bits of cantaloupe or banana as a special treat. If a patient is cleared by Yellow Team, stabilized and pass infectious disease checks they can meet Bucephalus themselves, which Dalton believes helps reduce stress while enroute to a medical hand-off site. A perk of running an all-Android rescue team is none of the team are at risk of picking up space diseases from the people they're rescuing, but Bucephalus is, so infection mitigation protocols remain in effect aboard the Tardigrade. It's important to look out for everyone, even the little guys, when you're out in the void of space, because if you do then they'll look out for you in turn, and little Bucephalus does a lot of work making stressful situations that much easier for the people of Sol who encounter him.
