Putting the "search" in "Search & Rescue", Firefly is an integral member of the Salamander crew. An Android designed by Accra Intelligent Systems Laboratories, Firefly is a lightweight and incredibly mobile drone capable of maneuvering through tight or treacherous spaces, locating distressed starfarers and relaying their positions to the rest of the team. Firefly is a chipper and enthusiastic personality, carrying a lantern of optimism through the uncertainty of an emergency call that could just as easily turn to catastrophe despite the team's best efforts. This optimism can be infectious, as Firefly's arrival tends to mean the worst of a crisis is over and help is near at hand; their blue light and smiling expression make it easy to believe that a safe outcome is possible, which can go a long way towards putting a stressed-out starfarer at ease.

As an Accra Labs Android Firefly was trained on vast archives of old Terran media to develop a skillset, and their personality and self-identity would manifest organically from that process. Firefly's AI was trained on archives of forensic analysis media and wilderness survival videos, cultivating a range of skills that would allow Firefly to analyze the state of a location and figure out where people who were there might have gone. There are a number of ways Firefly could put this skillset to use, but rather than aid in Terran criminal detective work, join a park ranger division or enlist the Terran Star Navy, Firefly opted for deep space search and rescue work. Their source data was based mostly on Terran planetside forensic media but the inherent weightlessness of a small, hovering Accra Labs Android seemed like it could be most useful in tracking down survivors of deep space calamities, so Firefly sought work off-world, eventually met Kenji and found their place on the Salamander Search & Rescue team.

The way Salamander is organized, a crew of six is split into three teams: Red Team handles transit, communications and organization, Yellow Team handles medical assistance and Blue Team is responsible for the location and recovery of survivors at the site of an emergency call. As the "search" half of Blue Team, Firefly uses their translucent drone fins to shed UV-spectrum light on an environment, surfacing fluid marks, footprints, grime tracks and other forensic information that could help them figure out what happened and where people might have moved to. Their drone body hardware comes equipped with a radio frequency decoder to help find comms channels survivors might use, as well as an atmospheric containment tent module- a set of nodes located around Firefly's hardlight projection lens allows them to put up a thin bubble of hard light, just enough to contain a supply of breathable atmosphere. Firefly's body can load a cartridge of condensed carbon dioxide prior to a mission, which can be heated, filtered through a gold screen and vented out through ports on the top of their body as oxygen, which when contained in their hard light bubble allows Firefly to deploy a small emergency breathable atmosphere zone in the event they find a survivor in an airless section of a disabled starship, Firefly can assist in delivering that survivor to safety. It's not wise to boop around with a belly full of pure oxygen, so carbon dioxide cartridges are the way to go.

Seeing as Firefly's hardlight body is merely a projection they could present themselves as wearing any kind of clothing, but they choose to dress in a simulated cold-weather survival gear to help project the idea of warmth and softness. While their teammates use these uniforms to provide a soft layer between an organic survivor and their metal chasses, Firefly's intent is to convey a sense of coziness and ease when they appear for a timely rescue. A favorite trick of theirs is to render a sphere of pure light in their hands, which can illuminate a dark space around their projected self; they can change the tinted color of this light to emit a warm yellow or a calming blue, or even a photosafe red if the need arises. As the first point of contact for the Salamander team Firefly is equipped to help secure and comfort the starfarers who put out the distress call that lead to their dispatch, able to navigate tight spaces, twisted shipwreck and the weightless hazards of space with ease.

One of Firefly's side jobs is, once the searching and rescuing is done, to help secure a site from any nosy little scavengers who might want to help themselves to some free pickings. This comes up fairly often when Salamander Search & Rescue are responding to a shipwreck incident, because it's usually Red Raven who shows up to tow the wrecked ship back to the nearest stardock. Red Raven are consummate professionals, but Firefly knows their data security expert, Clover, sometimes she can't help herself. Sometimes she wants to have a little peek at the systems and data records of a ship that's not up for salvage, that's just being towed back to port. It doesn't hurt anyone to look, right? Firefly doesn't think so, and they'll make sure Clover keeps her nose inside her own ship. Have you ever seen two little Accra drones squabble with each other? Their hard light projections will fizzle out and they buzz around each other flexing their fins and sending their thoughts wirelessly back and forth. It's very cute. Neither company will fess up to their rescued starfarers as to what the little drones are arguing over, though. They're under enough stress as it is. Sometimes it's better to keep these things to yourself.
