Meet Birdsong46, flight surgeon and leading medical officer of Salamander Search & Rescue. The other half of Yellow Team, Birdsong46 accepts the handoff from P47CH and transitions an injured starfarer into the care of the Tardigrade's medical bay. In contrast to P47CH's jovial nature, Birdsong46 is very clinical and to-the-point, getting right to work in mending a patient while Kenji and Dalton move the ship to the nearest long-term medical facility. She keeps studious records of the patient's condition, the state of the environment they were found in and any notable events that occurred while in transit from the emergency distress site, so when the Salamander crew hand off their patient to, say, Titan General Hospital, the care team there have as much data as they need to ensure a soft landing at the end of the rescue line. Playing off her given name, Birdsong46 represents herself as an image of a bird on her cathode ray emotive display monitor, so when she is speaking very serious medical terms at you it is like a glowing little bird is talking to you from inside a birdhouse. It can be a jarring experience but you will at least know you are in safe hands with the funny talking bird.
Birdsong46 is a Horizon Adaptive Systems Android, meaning her skillset hardware is ROM based, dependent on a set of three Job Cartridges she can plug into her chest. This may seem like a hindrance at first glance, but it's actually quite a boon for a surgeon like Birdsong46! She's amassed a collection of Job Carts that cover a wide range of practice- a few of them, sourced from Martian interplanetary expedition forces, are particularly rare and hard to come by- and coordinates with her team to prep which carts she wants to plug in before their patient arrives. She tends to reserve her top cartridge port for the species of starfarer, having anatomical and pathological data sets prepared for each world that organic or synthetic life comes from forming the foundation of her knowledgebase. In her middle cartridge port she will pick a medical skillset based on the nature of a starfarer's injuries; this can involve burns, broken bones, suturing wounds, voltage management, system defragmentation and so on. Pairing carts that cover scopes of practice with carts that match the makeup of a patient allow Birdsong46 to tailor her practice to the specific needs of a distress call site. Her third cartridge port is reserved for Archival Services and Recordkeeping, which lets her meticulously document the minutiae of a rescue operation's variables and ensure a destination care facility is fully informed as to a patient's condition at the time of handoff. She, again, also represents herself as a funny little bird in her display monitor while she does all of this. This bears repeating.
While the Away Team handles the search and rescue aspects of a job, Birdsong46 tends to remain on or around the Tardigrade during active operations. Even if the Away Team reports no obvious injuries to an incoming starfarer, Birdsong46 will still prepare for a psych evaluation- not an in-depth inquiry, mind you, but a quiet monitoring of a patient's mental state while they are offered the comforts of the Tardigrade to de-stress and rest after what is often a harrowing ordeal. Prying into a patient like this is not a good idea, it's more important for them to rest, but they'll still receive a general physical exam and then a quiet behavioral observation by Birdsong46 for any signs of unseen conditions that may have resulted from the trauma of being stranded in the void of space. It's a careful line to walk, but thankfully Birdsong46 is a precision instrument and knows enough not to further stress a rescued patient.
Seeing as her duties involve long periods of downtime punctuated by short bursts of intense pressure, Birdsong46 has a lot of time to prep for her role on the Tardigrade. She is particularly fond of Dalton's pet turtle, Bucephalus, and has taken to enlisting him in acting as an assistant in managing patient stress. Dalton likes to share Bucephalus with starfarers as a way to reduce their stress, so Birdsong46 has taken to following along to observe patient behavior while they hang out with the little turtle. Bucephalus makes a great stand-in for a behavioral analysis liaison, and many of Birdsong46's observations make their way into her patient records. It's a lot gentler than probing questions, she feels.
Salamander Search & Rescue rarely sleeps, they are always on call for Titan Radio Dispatch to relay them the coordinates of a distress call, and thanks to their unique all-Android crew composition there are few environments they can't safely arrive at. If you're ever adrift in the Outer Belt or you're lost on a backwater moon with dwindling supplies and no way home, don't be afraid to put out a distress signal. Titan's satellite relay network will pick up your message, and the team will be at your location in no time. Salamander Search & Rescue: they're here to pull you out of the fire.
