Dr. Syff is a Caelian scientist and the last member of the Timberwolf Reclamation & Demolition crew, serving as their medical officer. They specialize in studying and interpreting the unseen forces of the universe, like heat, gravity, radiation and electromagnetism. "To see the unseeable, to know the unknowable" is Dr. Syff's working motto and the driving force behind their practice, complimenting the doctor's clinically-curious personality quite well. They are somewhat emotionally-detached and very straightforward about their work, still caring for the well-being of those around them but perhaps secondary to the possibility of achieving greater understanding of the forces at work around them. This interest in the unseen also builds into their hobby, as Dr. Syff likes to build small kinetic magnet sculptures from scrap bits the team recover from a salvage job, nurturing an artistic curiosity to pair with their scientific pursuits.

Caelians come from the planet Caelus and greatly prefer this label to the original Terran name for Neptune's larger neighbor. They are a boneless aquatic species, their insides comprised of a collection of jelly and protein clusters inside a thick rubbery hide; they flex their six limbs by expanding these jelly clusters in groups, and their tensile strength has allowed them to walk around on land as well. While they can move about on their own, Caelians depend on special aquatic collars connected to their breathing tubes which use special fins to draw breathable elements out of the air and keep their fluid containers rich and clean. Dr. Syff and many of their fellow Caelians live in Titan Garden's aquatic district, sharing a neighborhood with Europans and aquatic Terrans like Carol. It can be nice to take the breathing collar off and just float about sometimes.

One of the notable features of Caelian physiology is their ability to use the jellies inside their head to sense electromagnetic fields. This is the root of Dr. Syff's curiosity about the unseen world and it is the core of Caelian medicine, treating patients by detecting disruptions in their electromagnetic field, or finding unusual hot spots or areas of the body giving off "bad vibes" so you know where to realign a patient's jellies to keep their fields in alignment. Non-Caelian patients have complicated networks of very dense or solid jellies but Caelian medical science has learned to adapt their methods since integrating with the rest of the Sol system. When treating a patient the doctor does not pay any mind to their apprehensions about their methods- sometimes you have to open them up to patch up specific jellies but when they're done complaining the patients usually feel a lot better. In contrast to Dr. Lin's xenomedical practice treating conditions as they present in the context of the species they present in, Dr. Syff tends to take a preventative approach, trying to anticipate problems before they flare up and apply Caelian medical wisdom towards finding a solution in whoever that happens to be.

Timberwolf hired Dr. Syff when they began to get larger demolition contracts from clients whose higher-ups needed to see environmental impact and sanitation reports after a job was finished. Many older space stations or satellite installations- particularly older Martian rigs- used radioactive power sources that were much dirtier than modern standards, and these elements need to be contained and removed from orbit without leaving behind any invisible hazards for the next satellite to encounter. Dr. Syff supervises the decommissioning process to ensure both containment of invisible forces and to ensure the safety and health of the crew working on the job- it's generally always a good idea to bring your own doctor out into the depths of space, but Bryce hadn't gotten around to hiring one until he was basically forced to. Having the doctor on the team is a great help when salvaging shipwrecks, where Pixel in particular wants to be triply-sure there isn't any sort of hazardous energy field leaks on board a broken starship. Having their jellies tenderized takes a bit of getting used to but the whole Timberwolf squad is happy for the safety and assurance Dr. Syff brings to the Ermine, and Dr. Syff is happy to have a whole galaxy of invisible forces to study.
