They also wanted the plane to be able to land skids so it could land on water because Marines like to pretend very hard that they're not Navy's Army and that they'll operate fixed wing planes without any carriers chilling nearby.
But what's even cooler is Army shidding their pants that aknowledging that their observation plane shot down an actual honest-to-God fighter plane would lead to the Air Force taking the observation planes away.
