I'm very bad at reading books; I end up getting overwhelmed by choices and reading nothing instead.

I recently read Annihilation and McDowell's The Elementals, both rule. Definitely pick up the Elementals if you like southern gothic/horror.

SO if anyone has some good horror, scifi, mystery, or other genre/weird fiction they'd recommend, tell me so I can stop equivocating!!

Have you read any Brian Evenson? The Open Curtain is very good: psychological horror with very unreliable narrators but its full of empathy for the characters even as they do worse & worse things. & M John Harrison's The Sunken Land Begins to Rise Again is also very very good & gets at this kind of brooding instability in the world that seems real familiar as soon as you start reading it. if you like trains The Motion Demon by Stefan Grabinski is All Trains (it is good)
