Listening to: Les Fleur by Minnie Riperton
Favorite Book: She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan
I read a lot of good books this year, especially in the first half of 2022. But nothing else I read felt as laser-targeted at my taste as She Who Became the Sun, and I am desperately waiting for the sequel. In lieu of a review, I'll share a quote that I think encapsulates the book very well:
“However tired I am, however hard it is: I know I can keep going, because I’m alive.”
Runner-ups: Black Sun, The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions, A Memory Called Empire
Favorite TV Show: Kinnporsche

Of course my favorite tv show this year was Kinnporsche, how could it be anything else. TV show of all time!!! We've got mafia, we've got toxic family dynamics, we have messy, fucked up romance, we've got so much style and gorgeous cinematography. Watch Kinnporsche.
Runner-ups: Severance, 3 Will Be Free, A League of Their Own, Our Flag Means Death
Favorite Movie: Streets of Fire

I discovered this movie by looking at Willem Dafoe's imdb page, and seeing him in these weird leather? rubber? overalls. Streets of Fire is what all movies should be: a tight script and plot, gritty neon-lit sets, rock concerts, kissing in the rain, sledgehammer duel, a funky little lesbian, a hero with beautiful pouty lips, Willem Dafoe. Perfect movie.
Runner-ups: My Cousin Vinny, Baddhai Do
Favorite Comic: Blue Period

This was the most difficult category to pick a favorite from, because I read a lot of great comics this year. Technically, my favorite is Witch Hat Atelier, but I started reading that series a few years ago so it's disqualified. Blue Period is gorgeous, and even though I definitely was NOT a fine art major, reading it does often feel like going back to art school. It leaves me feeling contemplative and inspired, and despite the large shifting cast, you get really attached to even the characters who don't stick around as long
That said, the other manga on my runner-up list is also super good and emotional, and X-Men Red is primo Magneto content.
Runner-ups: Tokyo Tarareba Girls, BL Metamorphosis, X-Men Red
