okay so i live in massachusetts, which in a bunch of ways is one of the less shitty states in the US, but a bunch of our utilities are privatized and recently in this state, rather than the companies having to provide power in a certain range of prices restricted by legislation in order to have the right to deliver power, they changed it so that you still only have one choice for power "delivery" (owning all the wires and infrastructure that bring you the power) but "freedom of choice" for power "supply." (i assume this involves generating the power and moving it around on some balance sheet? i'm not 100% sure. someone does in fact have to, you know, make the power.)

the company i said no to over the phone signed me up anyway so now i am signed up for two (two of them!!) different sources of power, theoretically with contracts, and i have no idea what to do about this. the billing statement says "If you have been switched without your authorization, a formal complaint can be filed with the Department of Public Utilities," which i think would qualify here, but i have to decide how aggressively i want to pursue this, because there isn't, like, a place to do that.

still hate this entire system! all of this is deranged.

because the furnace won't stay on. someone is coming to look at it; hopefully it will happen today and get fixed today. we're supposed to have a record low friday night (like -13F or something) so i am now terrified, but also, i guess it's good it happened today rather than two days from now? soooooo there's that

the thing where someone will show up "at some point today" is absolute hell though. hate that. hopefully they at least call first as opposed to suddenly there's just banging on the door lol :(

the new oil company sends way better techs than the old oil company did. i am now almost certain the people from the old oil company i paid to do maintenance a couple of times simply did not. i will probably not follow up on this because it is hard :/

this dude (his name was either dan or dave but like. fuck i wish i had written it down) explained things and then was like "don't do this yourself. this part maybe you can do yourself but not the rest" which is like the best

my favorite part was: "this looks like it wasn't cleaned since 2013. i actually think this wasn't cleaned since it was installed. holy shit. look at how disgusting this is." takes a picture "anyway it's easy to replace and a new one is like $4 lemme go to my van"
