i think what cohost is lacking most of all is definitely just like tools/features that make it more social, less lonely feeling.

i know partly it feels lonely here because im not a furry or like a programmer or whatever so i dont fit with the biggest crowds, but i still think the way the site is designed makes it feel really isolating

i don’t even really know what the solution to that would be, but

it also kind of seems like people on cohost are less engaging/interactive in general, or maybe that’s just because I haven’t met many people. but just from stalking random posts, even the most popular ones have very little engagement or interaction (and i dont say that from like a popularity contest or influencer-y way, i don’t give a shit about that). idk it just doesn’t feel very social for a social media site.

my favorite things about quotev were the ability to really customize your accounts with layouts, and the way that your feed was really just one giant chat room. it was so fun like replying to people and goofing off with people right on the feed, post by post, rather than just leaving a comment or two directly underneath someone’s post and then the conversation getting lost and, again, feeling really separated

I’m definitely not wording any of this very well because i don’t speak social media and don’t know the best ways to get my points across

oh edit: having more ways to really customize/personalize our profiles/pages would be a help, too, i think. to kind of set people apart and really have an opportunity to express ourselves and show a little flair of what our vibe is with more than just blocks of text that most people don’t want to read unless they’re invested

I don't know if I mind this? I use cohost to post cat pictures and read interesting stuff, and my cat pictures get enough people liking them that it'd be mildly annoying to count, which feels good.

I'll post things that aren't cat pictures or pottery and maybe someone likes it, but I'm mostly posting into the void.

I wonder how much of this is a lack of preference, and how much of it for me is a preference for lack. Like, if I spend time on reddit, or on twitter, the feedback loops of getting input on everything I say, even if it's just upvotes/downvotes/likes, is anathema to my mind. I'll start shaping myself to what that community wants, regardless of how I feel about it.

Here, there just isn't that. There isn't any feedback. There isn't really any connection. And so I can just come here, post cat pictures, and read long posts with interesting ideas. I don't think my life is worse for then just thinking about those long posts in my head, rather than commenting here.

There's a point to me resharing this, though, rather than just opining on my own. Which is, mainly, I don't think I'd realized I've been thinking this way, nor what I am potentially missing. I think it's useful to realize the design does actually lead to us lacking things that other platforms have - it's not just a positive difference.
