Definitely a step up from Kirby’s Dreamland. Dreamland 2 definitely builds off of both Kirby’s Adventure and Kirby’s Dreamland in order to make what was a pretty fun platformer. It has a lot of really fun ideas that haven’t really been revisited since Dreamland 3, and I really enjoy them here. Though I will say, while Dreamland 2 is an improvement, it has some rough patches to it that keeps me from enjoying it as much as I could have.

Of course taking from Adventure, copy abilities are here. There aren’t that many of them, but I do think there is a reason why that’s fine. I elaborate on that in a later paragraph however. That being said though, each individual copy ability didn’t really feel distinct enough when playing as just Kirby. They do function differently, but outside of combat rarely do you find one where it just is able to break a certain kind of block. Even with combat, copy abilities are extremely weak, leading to just using Star Bullets being the far better option. What makes this especially noticeable is the fact that every single time you get hit, you drop your copy ability. So it’s more convenient to just not use a copy ability for bosses, instead of having to balance dodging the boss, and picking your copy ability back up. Now that’s not to say that there aren’t good uses for copy abilities in Dreamland 2, rather, it definitely feels like a case by case basis.

Introduced in Dreamland 2 are that case by case basis, the Animal Friends: Rick, Kine, and Coo. You can find them mid-level in practically any of the levels throughout the game, and riding on them drastically changes each and every copy ability. The Spark copy ability easily becomes one of the best because of this, each version of it is amazing. The Animal Friends as well are really useful in certain areas. Kine is great for underwater movement, but terrible everywhere else. Rick is good on land, and resists slippery terrain. And Coo is just… genuinely the best of the three. Amazing air speed, being able to avoid most of the enemies in the level, and great versions of each copy ability. This all comes with acknowledgement of one of the few things that ended up really frustrating me in the game, that being the “Propeller” enemy. The Propeller only attacks you if you have an Animal Friend with you, and if it collides with you at all, you lose the Animal Friend. While that’s not terrible on its own, so many levels require you to have an Animal Friend in order to collect certain necessary collectables that immediately losing the Animal Friend because you got hit once is frustrating to say the least.

And everything to do with getting the True Ending is… honestly the best words for it are overly complicated. You need to collect 7 Rainbow Drops throughout the game, 1 per each level. That sounds simple enough, and it is for a while. However then comes around World 4-4. It’s not the worst thing ever, but having to balance out dropping your Fire copy ability, and destroying Star Blocks quick enough to regain your copy ability is an odd choice to say the least. It’s not as bad as the Rainbow Drop for 6-2 though, which is this extremely complicated chain of events that you’d likely never consider without a guide. You have to know which Animal Friend to take into the level with you, what specific copy abilities you need, when to swap, so on and so forth. And this is all to get to a true final boss that is good, but I really wish there was a checkpoint between phases. That’s really the only thing I think would help improve the final boss.

Aside from those negatives though, Dreamland 2 is a real step up from the original. I love the Dark Matter stuff, especially with what I’ve already played since I played Dreamland 3 a good while ago. All I have left now in this sort of saga is Kirby 64, and I have no idea how that’s going to go. Going back to Dreamland 2 though, while there are some design choices I particularly dislike, I really enjoyed this game from start to end!
