The entirety of Dave Sim's 6,000 page Cerebus the Aardvark comic series is available in high quality PDF format at Humble Bundle for $18. In my opinion, Cerebus is a seminal part of comics history and a masterwork of creative fiction. It is not without its fair share of controversy, but it is so unique a work that I find it impossible not to recommend. If there was ever a comic series that is nearly impossible to adapt to some other form of medium (video games, movie, animated series, etc.) this is it. Being able to watch as the author's art and writing improve and grow more complex over the course of a 6,000-page story created over the course of 27 years is a spectacle that you rarely get to see.
The controversy surrounding Cerebus mainly has to do with its strong criticism and sometimes outright condemnation of feminism later in the series, as the comic slowly morphs from a simple Conan the Barbarian spoof into a vehicle for the author's views on religion, philosophy, politics, spirituality, and more. It gets weird. Very, very weird. However, I am not the type to believe that because a work of art asseverates a viewpoint you do not agree with that you should outright avoid it. I disagree with most of author Dave Sim's opinions but find myself deeply impressed by his character art, attempts to push the boundaries of the comic books medium, and the sheer ambition and scope of the narrative he weaves.
I own the entire 300 issue series collected into 16 books (jokingly referred to as "phonebooks" by the creator due to their size) as well as the Cerebus Cover Art Treasury which collects all the cover art of the series with added commentary from the author. It takes up almost an entire section of my bookself just to give you an idea of how much you'll be getting for $18. I'm sad to see the Cover Art Treasury not included here but considering it's very clearly a coffee table art book it's probably best kept exclusively physical.
You also get Cerebus Guide to Self-Publishing, which I doubt will be of much use to many but will give insight into the self-publishing comic scene, which is an integral part of the author's identity. Cerebus was a pioneer of independent comic publishing, setting the blueprint which was followed by other famous comic creators to follow (you might know Kevin Eastman, who created a little-known series called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).
The one thing I can promise you is that you will never read anything quite like Cerebus.
Saw this utterly wretched fledgling red-wing blackbird at the marshland this weekend. Look at her. That is the bird equivalent of the world's most awkward 7th grader kicked out of bed at 7AM for school on a Monday. Look at her.
