If you like horror RPGmaker games, or just horror games in general, you should check out Cell of Empireo! It's a free horror RPGmaker game that's actually surprisingly long (seven chapters + a little extra). Its protagonist, Haruki Atou, is captured by the cult Path to Empireo, while trying to find his coworker, Eiji Shinano, who was last seen near their headquarters. As he tries to escape, he finds a few other people who were also taken captive by this cult--but can he work together with them and escape with everyone alive? It has multiple endings based on how many of your companions you manage to save + how much information you manage to gather while trying to escape the cult you've been taken captive by, as well as a DLC that adds more backstory to the members of the cult and the formation of it. (This DLC is unlocked with a save file that's cleared the 'perfect' ending.)
It can be downloaded here. The game is originally in Japanese, but has unofficial Chinese and Korean translations that can be downloaded there as well.
Unfortunately, there's no official ENG patch as of now, but the screenshots in this post are from someone making an effort to sub the whole game and upload it to youtube. The playthrough can be watched here, so please check it out if you'd like! It's not done yet, but it is currently being actively updated.
That's the general description of the game--but I'm also really fond of it in general, so here are the reasons I, personally, like it and think you should check it out.
- The game pays attention to very minor details that you'd never think it would. For example, a minor silly choice in chapter 3 will be commented on by a character in chapter 6....hours later. Some of the magazines and documents scattered around for flavor text are actually tracked by the game if you read them--if you read a certain one one early on, later on, Atou will mention having heard the name before in a conversation with someone else later on (when they bring up the name), versus having to have it explained to him. There are a ton of amazingly intricate details that add a lot to this game and really show how much love was put into it.
- It's a free game!!! I don't mean this in the "people shouldn't charge money for their games" way, I mean this was made by one person in their spare time with a couple friends assisting, not a company, and it's this long. (speaking of money, if you'd like to support the creator their fanbox is here and their pixiv booth is here.
- I really liked the mystery!!! I really liked what it had to say about identity and about Haruki Atou's identity specifically!! I really liked how it went from more of a 'classic' horror game to trying to find out the truth, and how in some senses the 'bad' endings are also bad because they're about ignoring or choosing not to find the truth!!! I like Haruki Atou as a protagonist and i'm so mad I can't say why without spoiling some of the huge twists!!! Please watch it and then come talk to me about it.
Hi, I'm reposting this because the fan translation has managed to finish and upload one route! (Spelled "root" in-game for reasons you'll have to play and find out.) It's E, which is the ending you get if you let everyone die. As you might imagine, it's a "bad" ending--it's a very compelling one, though, and sets up some interesting foreshadowing for future routes. I highly recommend watching it!
Silently watching
You're way cooler than most people realize but also maybe allegedly would throw a molotov at a building. Approved; you're valid.
