One of Titan Garden's leading ambassadors for the promotion of cybernetics, Otto is a Martian augmentation enthusiast who provides supporting services for starfarers looking to receive some body work. Otto's own cybernetics are one of the most extreme examples of the technology yet performed, allowing him to quite literally be in two places at once and multitask efficiently. For ease of discussion we'll refer to his instances as Otto Red and Otto Blue; both are Otto, and Otto is one guy, but whether you're talking to Otto Red or Otto Blue you'll have a distinct Otto Experience with your Otto. To better understand Otto, lets start by taking a look at his suite of cybernetics, then from there we can more fully grasp the role he plays in Titan's cybernetics community.

Otto is a Martian, which means he has a strong constitution and a unique set of physiological redundancies compared to other species in the Sol system. Martian anatomy Every Martian has two hearts, three lungs, four kidneys, two stomachs, two spines, a double-wide sternum, four clavicles and a segmented liver. For most Martians this means they are hardy and adaptable, able to survive in harsh and unforgiving climates; for Otto this means there's enough important stuff to share between his selves. He's always been fascinated by cybernetic technology, seeing people around him replace limbs or organs or cranial bits with metallic enhancements, and that got him wondering. With the right combination of synthetic organs and life-support systems, Otto believed that a Martian could augment an entire half of themselves, but rather than discard the parts that have been replaced, what if they installed a mirror augmentation to that half and kept it alive? Martians had enough redundant organs that neither half would be terribly lacking, they could both presumably be fully self-sustaining individuals.

Otto spent much of his formative years studying cybernetics, learning what's possible, what is successful and what synergizes with what among augments. He worked multiple jobs, saved up his credits and assembled and tinkered with a blueprint of parts he wanted to have installed. He talked to a lot of Martian cybernetics doctors about his plans, consulting with them on what is possible and finding the curious and somewhat ethically-pliable among them who would agree to take on his request. He figured he'd need at least three whole teams of doctors to achieve his goals- one to support each of his halves and a third to make the initial cuts. Otto spent a quarter century preparing his funds, his contacts and his knowledgebase to realize his dreams until finally, one day, a new high watermark for Martian cybernetics technology was achieved. Otto's plans worked, and now he had an entire half of his body augmented, and his separated half had its own other-half augmented as well. Otto had successfully pluraled himself.

While Otto's vitals work perfectly fine, each half-set of redundant organs supplemented by a set of synthetic counterparts, an unforeseen side effect came from splitting his brain into its two hemispheres. People have had halves of their heads replaced with computer augments before, the notion of hemispherical cybernetic integration isn't unheard of, it's just no one's really kept the other half alive before to see what happens. As it turns out, Otto Red and Otto Blue branched out from each other to develop their own unique personalities- they both share early memories from his life but they ways in which they carry themselves following his cybernetics procedure diverge rather cleanly. Otto Red is a lot more serious, very honest and uncompromising in his personality. He prefers light clothing with rounded cuts. Otto Blue is a lot looser and more jovial, manifesting a persuasive salesman personality. He prefers darker clothing with sharp angular cuts. Despite being of two minds, Otto is happy with himself and is celebrated as a landmark achievement in Martian medical technology. He wasn't content to just be a poster-boy for prosthetic parts, however. He wanted to do more with his life.

Otto supports the Titan cybernetics industry in two ways. Otto Red provides insurance to help support people who are seeking elective cybernetic procedures- it is not a riskless endeavor, so he believes offering insurance policies in the event of rejection or malfunction would alleviate people's fears about exploring cybernetic augmentation. Otto Red supplements this insurance by pushing for strong standards of practice among licensed clinics, ensuring they provide clean and professional care to their clients and don't allow the scene to develop a reputation for being a string of chop shops- in this regard his strict and uncompromising personality proves very useful.

Otto Blue, on the other hand, offers low-interest loans to starfarers who might not yet have the credits to pick up a new cybernetic, encouraging them to get some work done now rather than later. A fair number of starfarers find voluntary cybernetics to be useful in their careers in space, and their pay tends to come in chunks, so taking out a loan to fill in the gaps isn't too bad when you can use that new cybernetic enhancement to keep earning pay chunks and then pay down the low-interest loan. Otto Blue's more manic personality helps juice up a fence-sitting think-abouter, and a genuine passion for the technology helps make his low interest rates seem honest.

All the clinics on Titan know Otto, and while they may have different opinions about him, he undoubtedly works to promote more widespread adoption of integrated technologies and ensure the medical discipline maintains good health standards and a clean reputation. He is an enthusiastic and persistent ambassador for the potential good cybernetics can provide, and if you're ever thinking about having some work done he'd love to talk to you about your goals, your needs and your budget. Just, whatever you do, don't talk to him about Min-Jeong. He may be of two minds, but neither one of them is particularly fond of Min-Jeong, her work or the impact she has on the reputation of the Titan cybernetics scene, and he will go on and on and on and on and on about "the little butcher of B-District". It'll be hard to get him back on topic once Min-Jeong sends him off the rails. Just keep it strictly clinical.

So you're looking to get some piece of cybernetics installed, huh? Payment plans outside your budget? The clinics balk at your request? "What you're asking for is impossible, and even if it wasn't I still wouldn't attempt it" -- these words sound familiar to you? Talk to Min-Jeong, she'll hook you up! A Terran wrench-spinner who operates out of an old maintenance room she found unlocked somewhere beneath the Titan General Hospital train station, Min-Jeong is unburdened by licensure or liability and she'll totally do the job for you. She's willing and able to graft any piece of machinery to any part of your body and she'll do it for barter- if you have something cool to trade you can forego credits entirely and still find your way under her knife. It goes without saying, but Min-Jeong does not take patients from Titan General, all of her clients are volunteers. Just keep in mind there's no takesies-backsies if you're not happy with the results of her work. Caveat emptor!

Min-Jeong trades in Scrap style cybernetics.

  • [+] Scrap tech has no limitations. If you can build it, you can have it installed.
  • [+] Very inexpensive compared to other available styles.
  • [-] Healing and recovery time is very long.
  • [-] Rejection rates are very high.
  • [-] Maintenance is unscheduled.
  • [-] Aftercare is not provided.
  • [-] No refunds.

Scrap cybernetics is a pretty big tent without any stylistic specifications in the same sense that the other more clinical providers can offer. "No limits" does genuinely mean anything is possible, although Min-Jeong tends to procure her goods from a few reliable sources. Android parts are distinct from cybernetics in that they're not generally meant to be grafted to or operated by organic tissue, but Min-Jeong is genuinely talented and she can find a way to make it work. Heavy industrial hardware can make a pretty handy makeshift limb, and Min-Jeong has grafted a few pilebunkers or plasma cutters to the occasional starfarer. She knows the backdoor keypad code to get into Titan General's incinerator room- that's usually where she unloads the leftovers from one of her procedures- and she's got a keen eye for spotting second-hand synthetic organs set aside from patients who no longer require their services; you can hose them down real good and then they're ready to tinker with. "Machines only do what they're told to do, so if you can figure out how to translate what a body is saying to what a machine is hearing you can do anything!" This is Min-Jeong's working philosophy, a mote of wisdom that is not generally shared or appreciated by the Titan Garden Cyber-Medical Oversight Committee. They can keep their dumb licenses, and the body-rejected hardware Titan General occasionally has to remove from her patients; the hospital keeps a store room collection of these failed curios outside of public access. Rejections aren't a failing of Min-Jeong's handiwork, it was simply the flesh that was weak, and that's bad luck on your part, buddy. We'll try again when you're all healed up.

Booking an appointment with Min-Jeong can be difficult, since she doesn't maintain an office anywhere. You gotta know someone who knows a friend who can text her and tell her she's got a new patient, and then you'll have to wait a few days to get a text back from an unlisted number. "wat u l👀kin 4?" That's your in. Describe what kind of work you want and if it sounds interesting Min-Jeong will meet up with you at one of her favorite late-night breakfast spots, usually a 24-hour diner in a backstreet of the A-District but sometimes she'll be in the E-District so you gotta hoof it out there instead. She won't do a job if it sounds boring- she's cool with cranial computer installations, ocular work and organ enhancements, but she really likes any job that lets her cut something off with her cauterizing laser saw. Her eyes light up when, let's say, the lead singer of her favorite scuzcore band wants to have a United Robotics android arm mounted on his shoulder. She's super into those kinds of jobs, like maybe a little too into them.

Speaking of, Puke Commander is a regular patient of Min-Jeong's. He'd originally sought her out to have his extra-strength United android arm installed, but it was her idea to add the high-torque motor, and that basically sealed the deal for Puke Commander. In exchange for her services he offered her free lifetime admission to all Pukes concerts, and that instantly made him one of Min-Jeong's favorite patients. When she happened across a piece of high-end ocular technology Min-Jeong fired off a text to Puke Commander, giving him first dibs on the hardware. When she found a couple synthetic bladders in the Titan General incinerator basket she had a great idea for how to never have to pee when you can't or you shouldn't, and she pitched the idea to Puke Commander- he loved it, he's never gotta worry about long flights or shows any more. The two became instant friends, an artist and a living canvas, an inseparable duo. When an unhappy customer is discharged from Titan General and comes around looking for Min-Jeong, The Pukes step in to intervene. She's a VIP.

While Min-Jeong can turn up anywhere around Titan Garden, she'll pop into the Dockyards frequently, looking for parts to inspire her next big idea. She'll hit up the Grizzly Bear Scrapyard, Jumbo's Parts & Performance, Timberwolf Reclamation and Red Raven Towing & Salvage to see what bits of hardware they have on offer. She heard from Puke Commander that he's done some salvage work with Red Raven, and that there's some really weirdly-good mechanics on their staff, if she's ever stumped on a technical problem to go talk to them. She has learned to look out for Amy or Lydia, and will usually pull them into a question she has about how to get so-and-so bit of machine working with this bit of computer, and you pull the right strings on those two and they'll talk shop for hours. Scarlet, however, is wise to Min-Jeong's games; she can see what Min-Jeong values most in Red Raven's salvage offerings, and it's not junior engineering science projects, that's for sure.

Scarlet isn't one to spoil Min-Jeong's fun, though; she's got a little arrangement of her own worked out with the young woman. Antique jewelry, heirlooms, tarnished old rings or anything sparkly- if any of Min-Jeong's clients offer some inherited bits of grandma junk as barter for her work, come see Scarlet right away. Or better, if she happens to mention old jewelry at her consultations her clients might recall some old box they packed before moving to Titan. Scarlet will give Min-Jeong really good deals on Red Raven's salvage and, if it's really sparkly, even get her some time to help work with the house mechanics on whatever project they're working on. Scarlet can't stand when Amy and Haley hire Puke Commander to help on a job, but he has brought this funny little crow to the Red Raven nest, and Scarlet knows enough to teach a crow to trade shiny rocks for tasty snacks. Min-Jeong doesn't value that old jewelry very highly, but some of Scarlet's other contacts sure do. Everyone's happy, and that's what's important, right? Everyone walks away happy.

Dr. Thuy is one of the more distinct cybernetics clinicians working in Titan's B-District. Where Starlight, Ironworks and Phobos present themselves like varying degrees of workshops or garages, Dr. Thuy's Willowbranch Cybernetics Center presents itself as a healthcare facility, mirroring the atmosphere of Titan General Hospital itself. Venusians' inherent regenerative properties means they generally don't have much use for cybernetics, but Dr. Thuy took up the profession to help share that sense of stability with other species traversing the tribulations of space. "Whatever your vision of wholeness is, we'll help restore you to it". The Willowbranch Clinic accepts opt-in appointments and has contracts with a few interplanetary corporations to outfit field agents with discrete tools, but their primary goal is working with patients from Titan General Hospital.

Dr. Thuy offers Natural style cybernetics.

  • [+] Natural cybernetics offer synthetic tactile sensation and an organic appearance.
  • [+] Stabilization gyros allow for easy control over precise and dexterous movements.
  • [=] Lightweight design is minimally invasive and has a very flat learning curve.
  • [-] Gadgetry is extremely limited, supporting little more than small computers.

The Willowbranch Clinic approach to cybernetics stems from a Venusian understanding of healing- hailing from a planet famous for sizzling acid rain, booming lightning storms and searing lava flows, wholeness of the body is not seen as an additive or subtractive state, but rather an oscillation that returns to its level balance in time. For many patients of the Natural style of cybernetics, a big part of that level balance includes a sense of touch and warmth, so Natural prosthetics prioritize lightweight materials, soft dermal coatings with delicate thermal meshes and synthetic tactile sensation transmitters. They're meant to feel like they belong where they are, regardless of how they came to be there, and barring a few panel seams they very much look the part. This commitment to offering wholeness comes at the cost of having minimal capacity for electronic features- ocular and cochlear prosthetics are limited to record and playback functions, arm units can support lightweight personal computers and a small holoscreen projector, organs work in the background and transmit natural discomfort signals to alert a patient to problems, legs have dynamic stabilizers to assist in balance and allow resumption of a natural gait without any relearning, and so on. The wholeness features a Natural cybernetic prioritizes doesn't leave much room for hoverboards or grappling hooks, but for many patients being able to hold and feel a warm cup of tea is a more welcome utility. Dr. Thuy goes to great lengths to ensure these patients are well-served.

Thanks in no small part to their clinical aesthetic and their professionalism, Dr. Thuy and the Willowbranch Clinic partner with a number of corporate clients to provide company cybernetics to qualifying field agents. Agents, like anyone else, are generally permitted to seek their own cybernetics wherever they wish, but if you'd like work done on the company dime most partnered corporations prefer the discrete look and minimal inclusion of toys that a Natural cybernetic offers. One of the clinic's larger clients, Delta Astronautical Solutions, did make a feature request- they wanted to know if the gyro stabilizers used in Natural style leg cybernetics could be applied to arms as well; all forms of cybernetic are capable of being extremely precise with their movement, but a stabilizer-assisted Natural arm could achieve this precision more consistently in stressful environments, and this is a valuable asset for a Delta agent to have. They paid well for the inconvenience, Willowbranch delivered and now they offer micro-precision stabilization as a standard feature in all their cybernetic limbs. Dr. Thuy figures, it can't hurt a civilian patient's path to wholeness, and it didn't make sense to lock behind a paywall. Everyone benefits!

One of Dr. Thuy's regular patients is a Delta field agent from Terra named Kamal. Kamal actually had his work done at a different clinic back home, but his work has brought him to Titan Garden; the Willowbranch Clinic has accepted him as a new patient and obtained his medical records from Terra. Cybernetics clinics working in the same style can often take care of patients using technology within their wheelhouse, and for starfaring travelers it's good to check in advance for clinics who service your hardware for your long-term maintenance and check-up needs. Since Kamal's work has him staying on Titan for a while, he and Dr. Thuy have become well-acquainted. Agents like Kamal tend to put a lot more wear and tear on their cybernetics than civilian patients, so they'll often need their dermal layers repaired or their rotors tuned up. Dr. Thuy doesn't usually ask questions of Delta field agents, it's better not to know some things.

As an agent working a debt recovery job for Delta, Kamal keeps a lot of visual and audio records in his cybernetic head computer. His model head plate has a small data port behind the ear for him to save backup copies of this data, but he mostly uses it to review an investigation for details he overlooked. The gyro stabilizers in his right arm allow him to pick very fine mechanical locks and aim a flashcaster with a remarkable degree of precision., which are two things he'll generally do to follow a trail of evidence and protect himself from androids who'd prefer not to have their hardware repossessed. He's got a conversation with Fish, a Quasar agent who'd also investigated the wreck of the Reef Shark, tucked away in his audiovisual hard drive records. Kamal uses the holoscreen projector on the personal computer in his cybernetic forearm to type up and sort out his personal notes. He knows his HAL-3 unit is somewhere on Titan, his cybernetics helping him gather and compile evidence before he can make his move. Dr. Thuy jokes that he must be on some adventure for all the maintenance she has to do for his hardware. That maybe he's looking at his problems all wrong, and that the answer might be right in front of him. Kamal prefers not to discuss his business, but appreciates the doctor's jovial bedside manner.

The Willowbranch Clinic isn't too far from Magnus's Ironworks. Somewhere on Titan a HAL-3 android likes to accompany her Mercurian friend to her own checkups at the Clockwork cybernetics shop, enjoying the spectacle of their interaction. You'd take the same train line to get to both clinics. Dr. Thuy hasn't yet booked Kamal for an appointment on the same day as Magnus's patient. Kamal's investigation continues.
