Let's enjoy some cats from the Tamra Maew, Thai manuscript books containing cat breed standards, and possibly dating from the Ayutthaya period (1351β1767).
This page features 14 illustrations of auspicious cats:
Who wouldn't want a cat like this!
Suphalak (Excellence) or Thong Daeng (Copper)
Of appearance superb, a graceful feline.
Color of copper glinting,
Eyes lit like shining rays
Against all evil, malevolence turns to content.
I want malevolence to turn into content! π€©
The British library also has a copy dating from the 1800s in their collection. You could peruse some auspicious and inauspicious cats from that online, although I gather it might be traditionally/culturally considered unlucky to look at the inauspicious ones. FYI, the pictured inauspicious cats include:
two unlucky cats that will bring disaster and catastrophy
two unlucky cats that will bring sadness, should not be bred or kittens will die
unlucky spirit cat with yellow eyes that will set the owner's house on fire
so browse at your own risk. (If my house catches fire in the near future, you'll all know why. π)
And finally, there's this real life cat. I don't know if it's auspicious or inauspicious, but it sure is stripey. π»
It seems to be a NaiNud cat:
And it's the reason I looked all of this up today.
You can also read about efforts to bring back and preserve some of the Tamra Maew's cats here, along with pictures of some of the breeds.
