I haven’t read a novel about the age of sail in more than a decade, and it was a favorite genre of mine as a younger folk. I prefer but am not averse to supernatural elements; it’s not that they take me out of the story, it’s that getting out of a bad situation by way of literal magic is not so compelling to me as “I’ve outsmarted the other captain by clever use of the wind/currents/subterfuge/knowledge of reefs/etc” when it comes to this sort of book.
