Cardiac Hypertension with Diabetes
Ever so often such is the way
For those of us living with illness
A common cause on the paper lay
Hot tears carved a path down my cheek
The initial loss a dull ache sharpened
By the bitter anguish of closure made real
The futility of agony with no relief
No amount of repentance can avail
This sentence typed indelibly forever
My throat clenches
What avenue might I avail
For any semblance of freedom
What path beaten or un-trodden can I travel?
There is only one meaningful path of egress
The pain of it a hot knife burning through
The very heart of me
The only recourse for the injustice of
A death foretold years prior by unfair
Happenstance of birth - the asinine
Genetic roll of the die that proclaims
A life without disease for one
And a truncation of another just at the middle
What possible way to live is there
With such a crushing weight
Patch the cracks with memories
Smile brilliantly through the tears
With love - fully - openly with all my heart
To move forward
One step after the other
And live.
