Imgur porn ban 1 year later:
A hint of butt? 404, this page no longer exists
2 minute gif of a blowjob? No porn here, carry on.

I only recently realized this when Discord announced that they'll be changing how their embeds and media links work so that you can't use it as a place to upload images or gifs and then link them to other apps or sites. Some of the comments I've read just pushed it aside and told everyone to "just upload your media elsewhere." Big problem: Where? Imgur is trying to change into a weird social media site and actively deleting images that aren't popular or are NSFW when they used to allow that content. There's probably a bunch of other sites that could be used, but how many have catches or will be around long enough? I've sure many of you have been on old forum posts and all the images are gone because TinyPic deleted them all and is now defunct.
What if you wanna host them your self? Well good luck and I hope you have knowledge and money, because it ain't free or easy to set up. Sure, you could try to set up a server at home, but then it's going through your home network and that's very bad for security. Want a server in another location or other network? Fuck you, pay up. You want a domain so you can do more than just host a game server? Fuck you, pay up. You want HTTPS, for more security and because some browsers refuse to connect to non-HTTPS sites? Fuck you, pay up. Everything costs money.
We've had this tech for like 40 years and we still haven't found a solution for simply hosting an image that doesn't involve hosting it on someone else's server, spending money on renting servers and domains, or have a huge security risk. If there's some miracle product out there that I don't know, please tell us because it sure as hell isn't widely know thanks to late-stage internet capitalism drowning any site that isn't in the top 100.
So the weirdest part about imgur's porn ban is how it's a slow link rot. Pictures and albums slowly disappearing out of favorites. And like, you know there were more things here, but you can never tell what the missing thing is.
I am trying to write a non fiction Twine Thing about all the websites dying, and every time I come close to finishing another piece of the internet kind of just falls apart and I have to go back and revise to add that new bit of info.
