This game is racist.
I don't mean that it depicts racist characters and situations, although it does that as well. I mean that the writing of this game is fundamentally racist.
Almost every one of the native characters you encounter is a textbook example of the "noble savage" trope. There is never an option for the main character to consider them as reasonable and respectable people when talking to others, never an option to call out any of the countless people who will only refer to them as "savages" or who immediately accuse them when anything goes wrong.
At one point in the game the native peoples are having an election, and you do not have the option to not interfere with it.
When you do help them, you only ever do so either against an immediate threat to their life or by sticking exactly to the rules and following Procedure™, all while asking and expecting them to ignore their rules and traditions just because it's convenient for you.
The rest of the game is occasionally flawed but fun, but it forces you to play a radically centrist racist colonialist.
