Very high recommendation for anti-fascist Pinocchio. I shouldn't have dragged my feet on this one.
Many virtues, but one thing I'm not seeing mentioned a lot is that the lead child actor is incredible. He is a delight, well supported by the oft-witty, slyly trenchant, funny writing. Completely sells this fresh take on the character.
Film is slightly long and veers a bit into cartoon action logic toward the end, but the heart and ultimate vision are very strong and ultimately moving. It stands in stark contrast to the soulless corporate retread Disney just excreted, and personally, was a much-needed reminder that art can still delight and provoke even in the depths of my current depression. Going to seek out more del Toro now.
