I grabbed what turned out to be volume 2 of A Man and His Cat (Penguin Randomhouse link) off a library shelf and I'm pleased to report I had no problems keeping up simply based on the tidbits I'd seen randomly screenshotted on tumblr. There is the titular Man, an older widowed fellow, and the titular Cat, an ugly-cute feline. Together they fight crime do absolutely nothing involving any plot at all, it's nearly all vignettes of what life is like when you own a cat. Sometimes it's from the cat's POV and the dialogue fills up with cat puns.
To counterbalance otherwise being the cutest fluff this side of a Squishable, one chapter in twelve involves their melancholy/sad backstories. It's still not a tragedy or anything, but with my guard so thoroughly lowered by Fukumaru bapping random objects it did nearly jerk some tears. 10/10 good manga, do recommend.
