i've got 3 chapters i want to write, the indigenous history one essentially has a draft done already because i'm using a paper i wrote for a previous class and i've gathered a bunch of sources/game lists so far but i'm not telling you which ones because i want to see what gets recommended!
-
indigenous self-representation and preservation of history through videogames: there's some comparison of early indigenous representation via like sid meier etc but it mainly focuses on indigenous-created games that preserve and convey oral history traditions
-
queer videogames as history: i'm especially interested in this chapter at looking at how videogames have historically functioned as a space for queer expression in contemporary history, this one is gonna be probably the most interdisciplinary so like any queer games or games with queer communities that you think could be historically significant from the last 50 years or so. the angle i'm most interested in right now is trans expression in MMOs but i've done the least research so far on this one so any recs welcome, especially from like the 1980s - 2000s
-
interaction with history through historical dating sims: this is gonna be spun off of a conference presentation i gave last year and the focus is on how people (especially non-historians) interact with history, particularly history that isn't very familiar to them (US teens dating japanese historical figures on their phones for example). i think i'm aware of most of these games (focusing especially on otome) but there are a lot of them so definitely interested in recs, would also be interested to hear about otome that deals with western history (eg big tiddy anime queen victoria in code: realize)
i'm gonna be working on this for a long time so if you see this and think it's probably too late to add a suggestion, it's probably not! and even if it's too late for my thesis this is all stuff i'm interested in so hit me with it
