#LibDems

It's the usual grey, chilly weather for a bank holiday weekend, but also we've all woken up this morning to watching the Tories get pasted in the local elections, and that's a strangely addictive feeling. ๐Ÿ˜‚

I'm trying to imagine what it might be like if the Tories are beaten into 3rd place in the general election too. I know people fear the LibDems would form another coalition with the Tories. Hopefully the LibDems'd realise that's electoral death for them if they do. Ed Davey posing with people in inflatable dinosaur costumes with Tory rosettes on their dino chests hopefully means he understands it's important to voters to push off hard from the Tories.

If separation is maintained, then hopefully the LibDems could at the very least be useful for putting pressure on Labour to rejoin the EU? (I'm saying "hopefully" so much, and that feels weird after a long time of having little to no hope.) We aren't even at the worst point yet, when it comes to the way the cost of Brexit continues adding to the cost of living crisis. Some projections are that new Brexit checks could add 60% to the cost of importing foods, which will then be handed over to customers. People are realising the cost in household budgets. It's a no-brainer for LibDems in opposition to keep pushing for rejoining the EU. That could easily future proof their platform as the opposition for a good number of years to come.

If I have a fever dream of how I would like it to go - rather than how I think it'll actually go ๐Ÿ˜‚ - the LibDems would form a coalition with the Greens, primarily to pressure Labour to rejoin Europe. The Greens would push LibDems more to the left. And that would push Tory-lite Labour leftwards too.

I mean, I don't actually think that will happen here. But in another, better universe/timeline, that would be the direction that would leave me more hopeful (there's that word again!) of some kind of positive change on the horizon.
