Jack was expressing a sort of surprise that the Hunter World seemingly just uses the same calendar we do, with months like May and June and stuff. Looking at the calendar on Wing's wall, we do see that they have a seven-day week Sunday–Saturday, and that the 6th month has 30 days in it. But since the Japanese names for months are literally just "Month 1", "Month 2", etc, we don't necessarily know that they have the "same" months as we do, to the extent that's a meaningful concept, and they might not have the same number of months even.

My personal theory, which I'm sure we'll see confirmed soon, is that they use a lunilunisolar calendar – the months are based on the cycles of the first moon, with days added and removed to realign with the cycles of the sun and the second moon. We don't see the second moon in the sky because it was destroyed, but the calendar has stayed the same. There's a total of 25 months, numbered from -12 to 12, and all the leap days and antileap days are in month 0. These days also adjust the flow of the week – antileap days skip over whatever day of the week they would've been on, and leap days add an extra day into the week, called Nullsday or 無曜日 in Japanese. It all makes perfect sense once you understand it, trust me.

Blehhh, I've got a cold. But not one that's bad enough to stay in bed all day, just enough to be annoying. Kinda stuffed up, feeling a little sick and tired, that's about it. I was doubting whether I was sick when I woke up, but the second I got out of bed I knew for sure.

So, I'm workin' from home. I got my fancy new TK for my TKL keyboard, now it feels complete. Very tempted to install steam on my work laptop and play some Spelunky or Caves of Qud, really put it through its paces.

Havin' some pu-erh tea in the diffusion mug I got for christmas. I got this pack of tuo some time back in 2022, but I suppose that extra time sitting around only enhanced the flavor. It would be nice to get some proper young pu-erh again... I'll have to see if there's a tea shop in Tacoma I can check out.

Last night I watched some Hunter x Hunter for this week's Media Club Plus. I like that series, I've only read the manga before and I think the anime is enhancing my enjoyment of it, but man. I just do not like nen. To me, it is a strictly worse version of stands from JoJo. Just... as a tool for telling stories. Nen always gets too bogged down in the details, and the fact that it's an in-universe secret that only a select few know about makes the world feel smaller and more hermetic. Which is a bit silly to say, I know, given what happens later in the series, but still.

Ultimately, the thing is that it is simply the same storytelling tool as stands, but with more bureaucratic business attached to it. It comes down to how you like to read things, I suppose. Nen feels like it's written for the skeptical reader who wants to argue and tear everything down. Whereas I am the free-wheeling good faith reader, just going with the flow of whatever the story wants to do.

How does Hisoka do that stuff? I dunno man, he's got that evil clown power. We don't need to walk through it step by step. That kills the mystique.

I do love Killua and Gon, though. They are so fucked up in complementary ways, it's great.
