#OBX pinball

I spent a long weekend with Kat, Sammie, and DerbyGhoste at a pinball tournament in the outer banks of NC. There's a gas station and convenience store there named "Flippers" that, remarkably, has lots of pinball machines in excellent condition, and thus the Outer Banks (OBX) tournament is a yearly event on the Stern Pro Circuit that attracts some great players.

One thing they don't have there is good Internet, so we weren't able to livestream it, but we recorded a good chunk of it and we're planning to rebroadcast it on Triad Pinball, hosted by @FlannelKat.

This is the second time I've entered a qualifier for a major tournament, and I didn't qualify, but I'm pretty happy with how I've improved. The other qualifier I did (at Southern Fried Gaming) I finished near the bottom, though to be fair that was a pay-per-play tournament and I knew when to cut my losses. This one I finished in the middle of the pack, 63rd out of 111, passing enough people to pick up 4 IFPA points just from the qualifier.

I played in the OBX (Outer Banks) pinball tournament this weekend. I had a great time though I didn't place well. It's not like I expected to place well at a Pro Circuit event.

One machine I didn't play well is Space Invaders, the unusual Bally widebody machine that I think has a bad design but I recognize that other opinions on this exist. Dismissing it as bad has probably stopped me from taking it seriously enough to learn it.

After the classics tournament was done, Kat got my attention and said she'd found the shots to make on Space Invaders to light the spinner and rip it repeatably. (PinTips will just tell you to shoot for the very dangerous horseshoe lane.) She coached me about the shots to make and I played a game...

and I got the high score on the machine.

You can see this from the two photos: the first (showing 991,500 in the P1 score display) is my score, and the second (showing 991,500 in all displays) is the high score.

There's a weird catch to this that I think just makes it extra cool.
