Album info

Advertised in the Spring/Summer 1996 Nintendo Power Supplies Catalog, PLAY IT LOUD! Original Soundtrack Volume 11 is a not an original soundtrack but a 73-minute compilation of tracks from six different SNES games, including Yoshi's Island, F-Zero, Ken Griffey Jr.'s Winning Run, Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, and Star Fox.

Quality-wise, things are all over the place. This is a frankenstein'd release cobbled from those games' respective Japanese soundtrack releases – five different CDs across four separate labels means varying amounts of reverb and inconsistent volume as you move from one game to the next. The Star Fox credits theme appears twice, once at track 34 and again as a perfect duplicate at track 41. This is not the first time a Nintendo Power CD production would have QA issues – more on that in a future post.

The notable, stand out curiosities on this disc are the three tracks from Rare's Ken Griffey game. For one, they're unique to this release, having no Japanese CD counterpart to copy from. But they're also the only tracks on this disc NOT to be recorded off a SNES. They seem to have come directly from Eveline Fischer's production tracks before sample compression. Compare to the in-game recording below.

  1. There was no Volume 2.
