#Romance novel

Romancing the Stone Review

This was one of those movies my mom showed me as a kid, and though it's technically a romance movie, it's got enough adventure that it was genuinely one of my favorites growing up, and I haven't seen it in close to 15 or 20 years.

The premise is simple: a mousy romance author is forced to travel to rural Columbia after her sister lands in hot water in a war between jewel thieves and PMC guerillas. It doesn't take long before she learns how unrealistic her romance novels truly are.

It's not exactly Indiana Jones, but it's plenty fun. And in retrospect, surprisingly adult for something I probably first saw when I was 10 years old. There's a lot of wet clothes clinging to skin, innuendo, grungy decaying skeletons, and a whole entire scene revolving around getting baked on multiple kilos of marijuana.

This is a great look for Michael Douglas. He always seemed to prefer suits and domestic roles, but he's got a gritty Kurt Russell vibe here, and Kathleen Turner knows how to avoid the screaming and whimpering that made characters like Willie Scott so obnoxious in Temple of Doom.

Honestly, the more I think about it, the more this movie shares with the Uncharted game franchise, particularly that very first game. Everybody says Uncharted wanted to be an Indiana Jones or a Tomb Raider game, but there's a bit of Romancing the Stone flavor in there, too. You could probably consider this a better Uncharted movie than the actual Uncharted movie.

But even that feels like a disservice. This is just a regular old good movie. Everything it sets up, it pays off. It's a fun adventure with great characters. Big recommend, though I seem to remember the sequel being a letdown.

I read this book in one sitting last night. It's not terribly long, but more importantly, it's a page turner. So engrossing.

I don't want to give much away. You should go in blind, if you can.
Suffice it to say that this is a science fiction novel. Mostly, the book is two characters on opposing sides of a war writing letters to each other. It is thrilling. It's heart wrenching. It's profoundly romantic. I heartily recommend it to you, at least if you enjoy sci-fi.
