rewatching a bit of Batman TAS, which was one of my favorite shows as a kid, but which i haven't really watched since.

and like, it's still an episodic kids show from the early 90s. the characters are who they always are, there's no long term plot to speak of, and the episodes can definitely be formulaic at times.

but fuck me man, the stuff the show does well it does so fucking well. the weird out of time mix of technology, the deco aesthetic, the orchestral score, all incredible. and while i wouldn't say every vocal performance is great, a lot of them are. also, something about animation from this time period just fucking hits for me, in ways that newer shows rarely do, though i recognize a lot of that has to just be nostalgia.

still, it's really easy to see why this show has remained so influential over 30 years after it first aired.

right now i'm flip flopping between "i should make a full game" and "i should just make a mod"

some part of me wants to switch back to making mods because it's easier and there's already a lot of hard work done but the other part wants me to finish something that's a standalone thing

i guess having a lot of premade stuff and a proven gameplay loop like doom feels like a shortcut in my mind. doom's combat is something that's already proven to be fun, there's a ton of premade assets...

but at the same time i always feel like i'm using a "crutch" of some sorts. like i'm cheating. i also want to be able to sell the shit i make. argh.

i think the constant loop of workin on a game for 3 months and then burning out partway through just keeps fucking me up.
