An important part of almost any game is the Heads Up Display. The first demo of Project Petunia had basic text as a placeholder for an actual HUD, as I am not a fan of programming UI.
But as I wait for the feedback for the first demo to trickle in as it has been doing, a good thing I could work on that doesn't pertain to gameplay is that UI. So I decided to not only tackle it, but also add in some sweet polish because while I hate making it, I love making it look clean.
So I did just that, adding in graphics for the player's current powerup and health, with some clean fade-ins and particles effects to sweeten the deal. The UI is simple but I don't plan on making super complicated UI for this game regardless; For platformers it's better if that stuff stays out of the way.
One thing that I did that was actually pertaining to feedback I received was to add some graphics on the world map screen that shows what powerup the player currently has. Your powerup always carries between levels, but this information wasn't shown at all in the first demo. So now you will always know what you've currently got on you.
