Cohost will be closing down; James Earl Jones died today. It's a rough time to be a round lil' droid on the internet.

I don't have much to say about James Earl Jones, except the obvious: he was a performer without peer, whose incredible voice crafted the soul of the greatest villain in the history of film, a voice as iconic as the mask of Vader itself; there aren't words for how indebted every Star Wars fan is to his performance. Rest in peace.

There are words for my debt to Cohost.

When Cohost launched, I decided I would start a blog on here devoted entirely to Star Wars, and that I would never let it touch my other accounts. This has been a safe space for me, a place where, when I've been overwhelmed, I could sink my energy into frivolous but enjoyable thought. I made friends here. I got jobs here. I invested wholly into my identity on this site, and I have no regrets.

I was writing a post here when my dad died. I wrote my feelings about him dying here, too. I have other familial connections to this place, too. I have kids-- I never talked about them here!-- and often I'd write my posts while they were in swim class. I can't look at Cohost magenta without smelling chlorine.

Cohost was a website built with intention and purpose, and even if it didn't survive, it fulfilled its intention; it did its purpose. It was a good website that never went bad. It often felt like posting on here was secretly posting to an alternate internet that never forgot the DIY pleasures of the 90s web1. I never committed a CSS crime, but it was lovely to see every genius hack you produced.

I wish I had grown a larger audience, but only because I liked getting asks and they were pretty few and far between for me. Otherwise, this space was just for me, and I loved it. And I'm glad we posted together. It was good to see your thoughts and learn from you. It was fun to vainly try and change your opinions about the Sequels. It was lovely, truly.

Tremendous thanks to the Cohost @staff. This wasn't a waste of time or money-- it was good, for a long time you made a wonderful thing, a very special thing that good people will treasure in their memories. You should be tremendously proud of all that you've done. If I ever meet you in real life, I'll buy you a drink, I promise. Thank you. Thank you.

If you want to follow me elsewhere, I used to be @ykarps on Twitter-- and I was @ykarps on here, too, though not very often. I'm shoebill.moe on Bluesky, which I suppose is the only place I'm posting nowadays. Maybe I'll try and be bb8 somewhere else some day. I made an email to support this blog! And a Youtube channel! Goodness.

I don't know if I'll post anymore around here; if I do, I'll rechost this at the very end. But either way-- I hope I'll get to see you around, and I'm always happy to talk Star Wars with you2.

But until then, stay safe. Watch the things you love, and tell people about what you love and why you love it. We don't win by killing what we hate; we win by protecting the things we love.

And may the Force be with you, always.

  1. A website from a more civilized age, one might say.

  2. There's a nice Facebook group supporting the Blast Points podcast that's a friendly home for Star Wars fans, I'm David Bednar on there.
