Chocolatier: Alter Eco
Flavor: Raspberry Blackout
What I Paid: $4.49
I was in the mood for some really, really dark chocolate this week, so for today's review I decided to try a bar from Alter Eco's "Blackout" line. This collection of ultra dark chocolates comes in a lot of different flavors, but - since dark chocolate and raspberry is one of my favorite flavor combos - this raspberry bar immediately grabbed my attention. Let's see if it's any good!
This Raspberry Blackout bar is an 85% cacao dark chocolate with freeze-dried raspberries mixed into it. The chocolate used in this bar is surprisingly smooth for an 85% chocolate. That said, it's still boldy bitter, moderately tannic, darkly roasted, and deeply chocolatey. The primary note of this chocolate is red wine, but I also get a hint of vanilla and molasses. The raspberries are a great addition to this bar. They provide a pop of tart fruity flavor that really helps lighten up the unrelenting intensity of the chocolate. They also have this fun melt-in-your-mouth texture, and the seeds of the berries provide a pleasant crunch.
I like this bar! While I could definitely see it being too intense some people, I like strong flavors, so this bar is right up my alley! I would definitely get it again, and this whole experience has me really curious about the other flavors in "Blackout" line.
