I love being able to do this on Cohost.
We're gonna be starting up a new TTRPG campaign soon, and I want to be able to record our sessions strictly for personal usage/record.
I know that Boundary Mics/PZMs exist, as well as Lavs, and I'm no stranger to running some XLR. I'm trying to resolve a solution for my specific needs, and wonder if you might know of a mic I'm not finding!
- Above all else, it's gotta be on the cheaper side. Sub-$200AUD (~$130 USD at time of writing).
- Preferably wired for power (USB is fine); I don't ever want to miss out b/c I forgot to charge a thing or because batteries died mid-way-thru a session.
A PZM can do this just fine, but the problem I'm finding is that they're all mono! A consequence of going for omnidirectional, I think.
Hence the final ask:
- Is it possible to have a single powered solution (even if it involves multiple mics in a device) record sound from all directions around a table, but also differentiate direction?
It's not a requirement, but it would be very nice to have. The reason I want it is because it makes a HUGE difference in being able to parse dialogue from speakers if they're not all in mono, stacked perfectly on top of each other. It's the exact same issue I have with multi-user voice chat - directional voice chat means I can pick out multiple speakers and have no trouble at all. Standard mono voice chat is unintelligible mush the moment 2+ speakers are happening.
