Gary and Tracey are such fun characters to write because both are more complex than you might think on the surface (Gary in particular has one of the best character arcs in canon—though it’s one hell of a slow burn—and very much contains multitudes, while we get a lot less of Tracey but what we do get shows a really unique and charming character with more depth than most of the fandom gives him credit for), which simultaneously gives you plenty to work with and plenty of room for interpretation (added to even more by Tracey’s backstory being a total blank slate you can do whatever you want with), and they’re especially fun to write together because they make such good foils to each other. They have similarities, such as being very intelligent and passionate, having connection to Professor Oak, and liking to tease people (for examples of this behavior from Tracey see Bye-Bye Psyduck and Wherefore art Thou, Pokémon?), and show signs of insecurities. They also have a lot of traits that contrast with each other—Tracey is gentle, mild-mannered, humble, agreeable, and sincere, while Gary is rough around the edges, haughty, stubborn, and has tsundere tendencies. Them both having a tendency to work too hard is kind of headcanon territory but makes a lot of sense for the behavior and characteristics they show in canon, and it amuses me greatly to imagine them both hypocritically getting on each other’s cases about it. All around they’re delightful and I want to write them forever.
