#World War Z

Definitely the dumbest part of World War Z was them handwaving away why the US military couldn't stop the zombies by saying that they used anti-tank ammunition and lacked the preparedness from fighting "brushfire wars:"

  • Why would the military forget they have HE and other infantry-defeating rounds?
  • Why would a military fighting "brushfire wars" not be prepared to fight an infantry only war?
  • When you consider that zombie hordes are a) tightly packed and b) not trying to take cover, you can get some efficient effects from APFSDS spearing multiple guys etc.
  • Seriously, no matter how resilient your zombie is, anything above 5.56 will break bones and tear muscle, making them physically incapable of functioning.
  • Unless you're pulling an Exmortis or something, no zombies can withstand getting a MOAB dropped on them

I hope someday someone gets to make the World War Z movie we should have had. It's all there in the book! You just shoot it like a documentary, cutting between interviews with a bunch of colorful characters and found-footage zombies and you even can do that thing filmmakers love where you get to make fake in-universe advertisements and propaganda! Impossible to screw up!

Well, not impossible. You could always throw out every concept in the book except "the general idea of zombies" and cast Brad Pitt as Some Guy whose main character attribute is being some guy. I have not felt more differently about a book and its movie adaptation since American Psycho and that was the other way around.

But we reboot shit all the time now, right? There's still a chance to do this right! And after COVID there's a whole new poignance to "the world must comes together to fight a plague, but politics and selfishness are not so easily set aside," seriously this thing writes itself.

Ah well. At least the audiobook is great.

World War Z Review

The only thing World War Z has going for it is the spectacle of the zombies making giant piles and climbing up shit. That's why it's what everyone knows about this movie, and why it's on the poster. But far more importantly, ISRAEL IS OVERRUN BY ZOMBIES BECAUSE THE MUSLIMS MADE TOO MUCH NOISE IN THANKING GOD FOR THEIR RESCUE, AND SO ISRAEL IS PUNISHED WITH COMPLETE ANNIHILATION FOR AIDING THE MUSLIMS. That's the scene. Where the zombies climb up the wall, the one everyone knows? They climb up the wall because they hear Muslims praying inside the walls. It's by far the weirdest, explicit Zionism and islamophobia I have ever seen in a movie, and it is baffling to me that relatively few of these reviews mention it.
