Some years ago I made a zine that was part comics, part images of these two little nerds traveling together. I have said to myself for years I'd like to revisit them and do more with them.
So, over the past few months, I've been spending time thinking out their world, their personalities, unifying their bodies, etc.
Lyra
I've spent time finding out how to most efficiently draw their faces, Lyra especially, having such a short beak. I also wanted to codify their outfits more. I did so here with Lyra, Ulna needs work.
Ulna
With Ulna, i found myself slipping into giving them a more generic hawk profile, and had to spend time finding that more distinct Vulture face. Also, as seen in the color image above, I'm playing with the idea of adding charms to their beard.
I want to really play off the difference in shapes with these two. Ulna is long, thin and stick like. Lyra is short, round and low center of gravity. I'm excited at the idea of drawing the two of them together and how they play off of each other.
The image up top was the first mood piece I've done, and the first time I've done either of them in color. Ulna is a Necromancer, but not in the way of being motivated to use the dead for their bidding. I want to show a more cooperative, beautiful side to the concept of un-death. I'm not entirely sure what that'll be! But it is what interests me most.
I haven't been drawing much lately, so I did want to at least share some of what I've been thinking on paper. I'm in a very thoughtful/planning phase of a lot of projects right now, but I am slowly chipping away at a few. Also, maybe posting some of this will help me with getting back the momentum to keep going.
