I've decided to start keeping a sort of art experiment journal of sorts. One of the things I've been trying to push myself to do more is to experiment in mixed media art of various types (mainly canvas art and sculpture art.) and maybe keeping track of what I'm doing will be helpful. Inspire me to play more with my art experiments.
I also want to share my experiments/thoughts with others because who knows, maybe someone else will be inspired or learn something from these notes. I'm also open to notes/conversations is anything I'm writing about it interesting to anyone.
So on to my first entry.
For this entry I'm going to talk about the tulle and paper experiment mainly. As well as some cardboard texture packaging envelope experiments.
For the paper and tulle, I've found a interesting look out of having a shape cut out of gold colored paper and then securing some red tulle over the shape with tacky glue. A very fiddly process that will get glue on ones fingers. I start by brushing glue (i know not all folks use a junk brush to dip into the bottle of glue and then spread the glue on the item with a brush. But works well for me.) on the back of the paper shape. Then i take a square of tulle (in this case red.) that i cut. I place the paper shape on it unglued side down and then kind of fold the tulle to the glue side. As mentioned, the process is very fiddly, but the look of the results is worth it.
I'm going for having the tulled gold paper shapes to be glue to a navy blue fish shape I cut out of card stock. Making sure to leave some space between the shapes glued down so the navy blue can still be seen. For the full fish itself I'm still thinking about what colors to use and the exact details in it. First thought is a wide, white sort of wavey shape where the big fish and smaller fish (with different textures on them then the main fish maybe? I want the big fish to feel special but also i think having NO textures on the other fish will make them seem too plain compared. Something to think about. )
The color for around the white wavy shape would be red i think. To evoke the red tulle. Though I also think some sort of gold markings in the red would be a good idea too to give life to that part of the piece idea. Now should that be more gold paper or gold paint pen? I'll think about that.
Now for the other experiment. Just mainly messing around with envelope package material. One thing I did was cut out some some kind of leaf/dragon fly wing shapes out of it. Mainly was playing with a tip I got that rubbing paper/cardboard on the edge of a table makes the material softer/more malleable. From what I was told doing this breaks down some of the fibers in them and that's why they get that way.
Tried it out with the package material and it feels softer for sure. Glued the shapes together in a dragonfly wings shapes. Not sure what my next step with them play wise is.
Thoughts for future play ideas
-
something with yarn or embroidery floss and the package shapes?

more of a reminder. I need to get myself some apoxie sculpt and gloves for working with it. (something i have learned from art videos. You CAN get a allergy to apoxie sculpt if you use your bare hands. Tip of the day folks.)
That's it for now. Feel absolutely free to chime in with any thoughts, questions, tips. Whatever.
