Worshippers of brass, builders of tech. The Serline are strictly of the Mechanist Order, having a majority of the founders being of their kin. Fast thinkers, methodical, and sly these serpentine cats will doubtless find many creative outs and ins for any situation.

Edit on 08-12-23:
I really like Umbreon and it's association to the moon, it has an appropriately mysterious and charming design. I'm a very big fan, definitely one of my top 10 favorite Eeveelutions. Uhhm, I said I was gonna write more on Umbreon today, but my brain is actually kinda burnt out right now.
It's designed really well though! Also their name in Japanese is Blacky (or Bracky) and that's really cute! I have an oc and he doesn't really have a solid name (or design, not super well-developed atm), but Blacky is one of the one's I've thought up and it's cool to know I'm not the only one to look at this creature and name it a cutesy rendition of it's main color.
Didn't really like this art when I initially posted it last night, but I can see it's merits now. I feel like something's a bit wrong with how some parts are positioned; I decided it looked better without whatever shading I was trying to add; and there were some other optional details I was trying to challenge myself on that I just couldn't get in and that kinda made me really upset and not like the art at all in the moment. Maybe I'll try to add those in again later. I'm overall satisfied with how this one turned out though.
Thoughts Journal or whatever I've been calling it:
-
OK, just starting. I'm just over the moon (pun not intended) every time I put down a few marks and it kinda resembles the part that I was trying to draw! Maybe I'll look back on this art later with a better developed eye for these kinds of things and it'll look like amateur hour, but I'm pretty proud of how things have progressed so far.
-
omg my brain is just somewhere else lately. Nothing can get done. Idk how time is just passing and it stresses me out on a very just-below-the-surface-level. Like, not feeling stressed, but like, the stress is still internally noted?
-
it looks like the Eeveelutions fit into the medium, 48x48 area, so I'll try to keep that consistent.
-
all the gen 1 original sprites have a single-pixel pupil. With my eyes like they currently are, I kinda get a rankin-bass vibe from mine when I try that. Maybe the eyes are too tall? Rankin-bass has a very distinct style and I've seen a few people try to emulate that. I feel it has a some in common w/ gen 1's style in that it sort of has this reputation for being janky (mostly because they generally are) and bad because of that (they aren't, mostly, and I can't speak that well for rankin-bass cuz I'm not trying to emulate that style, but it undeniably has some charm).
-
I thought up a good pose, but it'll require me to redraw everything. Admittedly, I'm not very far into the process despite how long I've been working on it (on and off, mostly a lack of focus is drawing it out). I'm thinking of an arched back or prowling pose. Something intimidating.
-
I've been pretty happy with the outcomes of my recent sprites, but I think most of my recent stuff has been missing something in one way or another (there's still something that's really bothering me with my eevee in particular, lol, going to have to make a 3rd one in due time.) It's usually OK, but I think I've best captured that gen-1 feeling with Banette, Applin, and Alolan Persian so far.
-
The head is a bit too thick, I think. Had some trouble getting the eyes on the head with it being at the angle it's at, but I think I've got something pretty good now.
-
Kinda nervous about how slow this is going, whatever, it'll get done when it gets done. If I tried to force this, it'll turn out all the worse for it.
-
Ok, getting somewhere, I've got the head pretty good, I think, now onto the ears.
Pokemon has this thing where ears will sometimes just not really be ears at all and gen 1 doesn't have many of these (Pikachu, Clefable, Snorlax, Mew and Mewtwo, Alakazam if we're to assume those horn-like things are ears like they are on Abra and Kadabra; I think that's all of them).
How would that translate to a flesh-and-blood animal? Is it like how I'd imagine the tail: sleek and smooth and just a little puffy; antennae of cartilage? If you, goodness forbid, shaved it's ears would there just be a couple of thin antennae of mostly cartilage? Maybe they're just rabbit ears with hair distributed just right to appear conical?
Who cares what the bottom of Diglett looks like; Gamefreak, shave this dog's ears for us. Please?
Anyway, it's a very interesting style choice; adds some endearment to a lot of designs. What would Umbreon look like without cone ears?
-
So many layers! Ideally I'll keep the layers separate for the convenience of editing individual parts later, but I'll probably combine some stuff like the head with the ears and sometimes I'll get overwhelmed and just flatten the whole thing.
-
I've been getting better used to aseprite; there's probably a lot I could be utilizing that I'm not, but I'm getting there. It's a very cute program, I wish more programs could be this charming.
-
Omg, working on the body and I've just drawn a crude set of front arms and it works really well I think. Like it's trying to secure a red dot on the ground, but not without being a little intimidating. I even removed the head layers to see what the body looked like and it looks like the arms go on pretty naturally. It's not exactly what I envisioned in my head, but I really like this!
-
Uh, idk how it looks right now. It's done, but I think I'm going to wait on posting it. No, now's probably fine, I guess. Idk how I went from "I really like this!" to "This looks entirely wrong." I'm just gonna trust slightly earlier Childe's eyes and say it's good to go.

Got suddenly really stressed out and anxious for some reason, not really sure why. gonna append some right pretty words about Umbreon to this tomorrow. Back in a "don't trust your thoughts after 9:00pm" era.
