Things go missing around witches, and sometimes other things take their place. If a heart needs fixing it may be one of these things, but something has to beat while it's gone. It's unclear whose idea it was, exactly, to stick a frog in there for this purpose, but it's clear that it works. The frogs even survive most of the time.
