Today in church Gooseberry wanted to draw; usually this means random swirls and careful scribbly zigzags (her imitation letters). But! today. Today!!! Today I Witnessed her First Tadpole Figure

I'm tearing up a lil thinkin about it; she got so excited after her first one and drew them over and over, declaring one to be Sam the Eagle, another Kermit. One was Link, one was Prince Sidon; there were grumpy robots and friendly robots (soldier and steward constructs)... She had me draw her face then immediately added arm and leg sticks to complete it 😭😭😭

it was about how toddlers’ art gets less realistic as they grow up because they develop the ability to translate their sensory data into conceptual data — moving from drawing what they see to drawing their interpretations of what they see. it included a line about cézanne (im pretty sure) painting still lifes in order to “drill his way out of his own skull” by intensely focusing on drawing what he saw and trying to skip the cognitive step of translating vision from the eyes into shapes in the mind. idk im at the art institute today thinking about that
