After Sony's September State of Play and the 2023 Tokyo Game Show, a LOT of you are excited to play Final Fantasy VII Rebirth next year. Nonetheless, as ZombiePie posits on their blog on Giant Bomb, are all of you ready for ANOTHER Square bait and switch?
And let's be real, this is 100% happening. Things are going to get weird no matter what.
Fuck the Cloud?
Not like, the clouds (fuck 'em if you're both into it, sure), but like, all-digital-offsite-machines-controlled-by-corps? Fuck the Cloud, especially for gaming, Fuck the Cloud as the only option. The Cloud should never be allowed to be the only option. Anything that requires an internet connection should not be allowed as a primary market unless and until the internet is provided as reliably as power (and even that's not all that fucking reliable.)
Microsoft pulled Starfield from PS5. Microsoft forced Bethesda to only use FSR2 when DLSS3.5 was right there. Microsoft have been planning to go fully cloud with their next console for years. Microsoft want your money, and want to give you nothing in return, where possible. Same as every other corporation. None are your friends. None care about you, at all, in the slightest. If they could all do what Unity tried to do, they would, without hesitation.
I'm so glad Microsoft are inexorably bound to Windows whether they like it or not. They'll never be able to fully turn the gaming market into a completely walled garden where we own nothing and are forced to lick their piss-stained boots, when platforms like Steam still exist beyond their buying power. (And, yeah, if they can't easily buy Activision, and pipedream buying Nintendo, a privately owned, 30%-cut-taking, market-leading platform like Steam is easily the highest valued entity in the space, by far.)
I don't love what private congregating platforms like Steam do to the marketplace, but I'll always love it for keeping companies like Microsoft from turning gaming into an always-online, inevitably inaccessible streaming service they control on a whim.
Aside from issues of ownership, and physical media, preservation, access, and more... I'm not paying $100 AUD for just about any game, let alone a fucking tRiPlE aAaAyyEeEe game. I'm not going to support that kind of industry. I am going to pirate it, where possible. I am going to encourage my friends to do so. (I am also encouraging my friends not to pirate indie games, and to buy them. Of course.) But Stephanie Sterling said it was morally correct to pirate tRiPlE AaAaAaaAaAaAaaAaeeeee video games, and she's the Commander for which we thank God, so it must be true! My high seas proficiency is retroactively justified when I buy the game when it's on sale, fully patched, with all its DLC, 2 years down the road (that should have just been more dev-time) for -80%, which is well below what most games are probably worth, but the only way you'll catch me participating in the shitshow that is Late Stage Capitalism.
