Solonne stands over a clearing. In the distance, a castle stands among the morning mist.

Perhaps Trifletown would’ve been a smarter place for this. There was clean water, medical staff in case of injury, people close by and ready in case of an emergency. There were plenty of monsters, monsters that Solonne knew intimately, knew well both in temperament and physiology.

And yet here she was. In the temperate forests up to the north of the Trifletown boroughs, past the running river that cut her city in half, over hilltops and among swaying pine trees and crisp, fresh grass. She breathed in through her nose. Out through the mouth with a loud, proud sigh.

She took out a journal and quickly jotted down some notes. Her glasses hung off of her nose, quill bouncing as she poked it into an ink well on her waist. And it was the only thing that covered her torso; a belt with scant medical supplies, leather pouches with potions, supplies, a net or two, a little bag for her journal, and a little lantern; perfect for those nighttime expeditions.

On her back was a gigantic scabbard; a huge thing that carried a greatsword that was as long as she was tall; a cool seven-foot-long blade with a haft made to give her leverage. It hung off of a canvas cape, a heavy thing that still fluttered in the cool morning wind. Her left arm and legs were covered in metal, gleaming steel only lightly marred by her desert march.

It all just made the fact that she was near-naked all the more jarring.

She had worked hard on her physique. And that crystal corruption that crept across her solid abs and chiseled lats was a bonus. Those scars that danced across her skin, the stretch marks where her muscles strained against her flesh?

All proof of her handiwork, and proof of years of experience.

She flexed her fingers and pulled out a scope. She put it up to her one good eye; her left had been ruined a long time ago, and was underneath an eyepatch (it was a long story). Her quarry had to be here somewhere. A notoriously hard-to-find beast who could be found somewhere in this part of the world. She stopped.

Now, notes of the creature were hard to maintain; there were few like it in the world, some beings similar but none quite like this one. None so elegant, so simple. So profoundly hard to catch.

She was looking for a unicorn.

The locals had given her some direction but it was mostly hushed words and mumbled whispers in-between an awkward side-eye or a blushing glance at her profound exposure. She would thank them and leave, with a few of them awkwardly watching this naked warrior stride through unabated. The Trifletown notes weren’t much better; nobody else had successfully caught this particular beast. They were just too nimble, too quick to evade, too smart. About the only thing she knew was that a virgin would attract them. Which…well…

She wasn’t one.

She hadn’t been a virgin for nearly a decade now. And far be it from her to question the mysterious ways of a magical monster, let alone one where her intentions were very clear, but she was curious as to the reasonings why. It was less of a question of whether it was possible (she was sure it was possible) and more of whether or not there was a good reason for it.

She definitely hoped that the unicorn wasn’t a weird lusty old man. That would definitely put a damper on the hunt.

The obvious location to look first would be the abandoned castle. Even now, years after being ransacked, there would still be riches deep in its depths, the remains of a kingdom that rose to power then inevitably fell when its king grew a little too big for his britches. It was a bit funny to notice the remains of obvious enchanted items, and a skeleton, presumably of said king, who had a comical number of spears lodged into his back.

She snorted. He was probably dead after the first two.

As she walked through the damp halls, she could hear skittering. Beings that saw an intruder on their turf, realized that a human was among them, then scattered. She twisted her spine, stretched her arms, then kept her march through.

Now, a unicorn tended to be attracted by virginity, and Solonne herself was absolutely not the bait in this case. But she knew what could draw a unicorn out.
