#d.e.b.s.
can't find a torrent for D.E.B.S. (2004).... tragic
Tis the season when all the theaters are doing their Pride screenings. There are the usual names that you expect to show up. Your John Waters midnight showings, your sing-a-long Hedwig and the Angry Itch parties, a But I'm A Cheerleader here, a The Birdcage there, maybe a screening of Paris Is Burning for the arthouse crowd, and of course the bitch herself Rocky Horror. But to me the best movies I find this time of year tend to be a little more low key, the movies that aren't established as the de facto Gay Classics, but the stuff that falls between the cracks, the charming movies that should have been genre hits except for the fact that they were about queer people. This was how I found out about Saving Face a couple years back, an absolutely dynamite lesbian rom com directed by Alice Wu. (She also directed the charming high school coming of age movie The Half Of It on Netflix, a movie I felt never got it's just due in a large part of being buried by The Algorithm.) I was struck by how such a film never caught fire. I have the same exact feeling after seeing D.E.B.S. this morning at Nitehawk Cinema, a wonderful action comedy that is Totally Spies crossed with The 10 Things I Hate About You, with a sapphic twist.
