lich, formerly known as silas, was a farmer who lived centuries ago, during the era of tallulah's ancestor and predecessor, solstice. silas was an easygoing, kind person with an affinity for animals, and was even friends with solstice at some point. however, one day lich witnessed solstice killing another by using his newfound powers to gruesomely turn their body into plants and fungi.

silas was traumatized by what they witnessed and had a psychotic breakdown. solstice took advantage of their fragile mental state, and gaslit silas into thinking they had hallucinated the whole ordeal. solstice acted as a caretaker for silas in the following years, as silas was no longer mentally well enough to take care of themself. solstice manipulated and controlled them all the while, even experimenting on them with their own powers.

eventually, silas realized that they had been lied to, and tried to stand up for themself. solstice killed them in retribution, specifically in the one way silas was most terrified of: by turning their body into plants and fungi.

but even after death, silas' soul was bound to these plants and fungi, and remained trapped there for centuries. it was only when they accidentally entered the body of a living person as a sentient parasite many years later that they could interact with the world again. a descendant of solstice, tallulah, found them in their new body in a confused state, and named them "lich."

tallulah and her family grew up in a bizarre city found deep with a ravine, sheltered away from the horrors that lurk in the caves outside the city walls. she was raised to be a priestess, along with one of her three siblings, since early childhood. but after her fellow initiate sibling was accepted as a vessel for the goddess All, and violently transformed and taken away from her, she threw it all away and ran away. while she thinks she has escaped becoming a vessel for All, unbeknownst to her, she is already the vessel for something else: the god Nothing. she is also haunted by the spirit of her ancient predecessor, a man named Solstice, who is the reason why the city and the cult of All exist in the first place.

a combination of the horrors she went through as a child while training to become a priestess, family generational trauma, and a history of inherited psychosis and mental illness in her family, has rendered her detached and quiet, with a difficult time understanding and feeling emotions. her only real interest in life is studying the bizarre horrors and entities that live outside the city. while her two remaining siblings want to reconcile with her, she only tolerates them because of their practical use to her.
